Managing A Diabetic Dog

Understand that managing a dog with diabetes may not be easy, but it is far from impossible. This is a pic of Frisco Lane, a good friend of mine who was diagnosed with diabetes some years ago. Friscos parents had to face the realization that he would need insulin shots twice daily, as well as specialized diet (fiber controlled), and that they would need to monitor his condition to keep aware of changes he might go through that would change his treatment plan.

Often, veterinarians may offer euthanization as quickly as they will offer getting you started on the diabetic program - Friscos parents were offered this. But understand, that Frisco is years into treatment from parents who love him dearly. He has maintained his vision and mobility. He eats a healthy diet (still fiber controlled) and enjoys his life tremendously. He is a happy boy, who has great parents. The truth is, they caught it early - because of those reasons.....they love him. So they noticed when his regular diet and water consumption changed. They noticed his body condition and behavior change......they didnt wait til he was sick and poor in health. They came in the clinic and basically said - "something isnt normal with my dog, doc......we dont know what it is, but hes not himself lately." That conversation led to the discovery of diabetes, with simple in house lab work. They saved his lafe, just by loving him basically.

Diabetes is not a death sentence for your dog. There are places that will help you, and people who have gone down the road before, so dont be scared to do it. Thank goodness they did it for Frisco, because he truly is a friend of mine, who I enjoy spending time with. He watches me do yard work when hes here, and he is happy to see me when his parents are out of town. I would miss that dearly.
